The Osa Peninsula is without a doubt Costa Rica's leading area for green building. Especially in Matapalo, green building techniques have been used for years, not only because the foreign population who have moved there are so conservation minded, but because there's no electricity - forcing solar power to be used and energy conservation. While some luxury eco-mansions have been built with extensive high-end solar-power systems, allowing almost normal (energy wasting) power consumption, the vast majority of private homes, eco-resorts, and luxury eco-hotels are using a variety of eco-friendly building techniques.
